A network you never activate is just a contact list.

Over ttime, we build relationships with former colleagues, friends, neighbors and people we have worked alongside, learned from, helped or simply stayed connected to. Most of the time, we do not think of them as a network. They are simply people we know.

That changes when we need something we cannot solve on our own. It may be an introduction, help with a problem, information we do not have or support for someone we care about. At that point, asking can feel surprisingly uncomfortable.

Most people I know are remarkably willing to help someone else, but much less comfortable asking for help themselves. We worry about imposing or making a relationship feel transactional. As a result, we sometimes stay quiet, and people who would gladly help never know that they can.

What I have noticed is that when people know what you need, they begin to think about what they have. It may be an idea, an introduction, a piece of information or someone they think you should know. One connection can lead to another in ways we could not have planned ourselves.

That only works because those relationships existed before we needed them. Over time, we answered questions, made introductions, shared what we knew, showed up and stayed in touch. We did those things because relationships matter, not because we expected something in return. No one was keeping score.

Perhaps that is why the size of a network matters less than we think. A better measure may be what happens when someone raises a hand and says they need something. Does anyone else raise theirs?

That is when a collection of relationships becomes something more.
